Tackling Micro-Plastics and Minimalism with Green & Beyond Mag for Plastic Free July

Monica Richards, an eco-advocate and TV personality focuses on two crucial aspects of a plastic-free lifestyle: tackling micro-plastics and embracing minimalism. By switching to laundry and dishwasher pods, she ensures that micro-plastics do not leach into the water system. Additionally, adopting a minimalist mindset allows us to avoid unnecessary plastic consumption. Monica’s lesson shows that conscious choices can have a significant impact on reducing plastic pollution.

What small changes have you made that have had a big impact on reducing plastic waste?

When it comes to reducing plastic waste, I believe micro-plastics holds huge seat at this table. In fact, we consume a plate full of micro-plastics every year. These plastics (5mm or less in size) have also been found in the most remote locations across the globe. so for me, micro-plastics are always on the mind.

I’ve found really impactful changes in the daily product/actions we don’t generally think about, including clothing and laundry. I’ve switched my laundry and diswasher pods to sheets and powder, as pods leach micro-plastics during laundering. And for the clothes I launder that are made of synthetic textiles (like activewear), I place them in a Guppyfriend bag to capture those micro-plastics, diverting them from polluting the waterways we so need to remain clean.

On a macro scale, transferring household products to reusables and refillables creates a huge reduction in platic waste. And personally, I’ve made the biggest difference by becoming a minimalist. Before purchasing a product, I always ask myself, “Do I really need this?” This simple question brings us back to our roots, before plastic was such a big part of our lives. It’s this frequency where I like to thrive the most X
